FoodBank South Africa is pleased that we are getting support from a place that does not link naturally to South Africa's problems of hunger and poverty: California in the United States.
Two high school juniors from a school in Irvine, California, have taken the initiative to help our beneficiaries. One of them, Jocelyn, learnt about the plight of the many food insecure children of South Africa during a family visit. In order to give something back to her mother's country she decided to form the club Cooking 'Cause we Care together with her friend Victoria with whom she also shares the love for cooking. All profit made by selling delicious self-made food at various occasions is donated towards FoodBank South Africa. They started the club with a fundraising event at their school's Club Kick Off Day. Besides earning money, the two girls also hope to create awareness for their cause and find more people willing to help our mission.
With the World Cup 2010 coming up, South Africa has the attention of the world: Wonderful stories such as that of Jocelyn and Victoria's club show the possibilities created through the global reach of FoodBank South Africa. Even though they might never meet the people they are helping, they can be sure that their support gets to the right place.
