This August, as part of the Women's Day celebrations which fall in this month, we focus on some of our beneficiaries that specifically empower women in the community. Of people affected by hunger, 60% are women.
One of the benefits of building a FoodBank network is the ability to put beneficiaries together to work on common projects. One such project is the Intergeneration Programme which runs with the Ncedusizwe Ladies Club in Gugulethu, which comprises of elderly ladies and youths between the ages of 12 and 16 years.
The centre is a place where the elderly in the area can come and spend a day and they also receive a meal there. Various support groups are provided including fitness classes and skills training. The Intergeneration Programme encourages youths to come to the centre every Wednesday where they share their stories and challenges with the grannies. This club also provides gardening skills which is run by an 84 year old lady as well as beading skills to the learners. Most of these learners are orphans and they all benefit from the FoodBank donations.
They became a FoodBank beneficiary in 2007 and now their programme is able to continue on a daily basis because of the support they receive. Through this, there are now two very successful clubs running which focuses on the intergenerational aspect of our lives.
