Learners all over Cape Town and the Western Cape came back to school today after a long Christmas break. With the classrooms filling up, you will also find FoodBank’s trucks going in and out of schools in Cape Town again. They are on a mission to support proper education for everyone. On our Lunch Buddy pilot program we manage to provide as much as 1440 children on a daily basis.
Adopted from the former Feedback Bread Buddies program, it follows a simple principle of redistribution: we are challenging students who attend a relatively affluent school to each make one extra sandwich and bring it to school. FoodBank Cape Town’s truck then collects all of them in the morning and distributes them to a beneficiary school having learners in need. In order to provide a nutritional meal, usually a piece of fruit from the warehouse is added to the lunch packet for each child.
With currently 36 donating schools, three disadvantaged schools are receiving Lunch Buddy packs, and four more fruit packs. On a monthly basis, 24 000 meals are delivered, equating to 240,000 in the annual school calendar year over 10 months. Those large numbers would not be possible without the effort of the children, families and schools vigorously participating and supporting this program, and the support of the sponsors.
In her visit last year, Premier Helen Zille remarked that she would like to see more protein added to the FoodBank lunchpack. We are happy to announce that with the support of Voice of the Cape and Shoprite / Checkers, R 10 000 in Shoprite/Checkers vouchers have been given to help make this possible.
Good education is one the key drivers to economic growth in the country, and a healthy brain can only learn on properly fed stomach. FoodBank is thankful to all our donors, schools and partners who help make this possible.
