Microwave Pap

The Lunch Gang have put together a great microwave pap recipe for you to try.  Make it this week in your company's microwave, and when colleagues ask what you doing, tell them about World Food Day, and what FoodBank South Africa is doing to help end hunger in South Africa. What's more, a serving of pap costs just 50c to make, so it's a great way to save money too!

YOU WILL NEED:

  • A microwave
  • Mielie meal (coarse Maize flour) - you can get this at any food retailer in South Africa for about R5 a kilo - Whitestar is a good brand
  • a kettle of freshly boiled water
  • a large microwavable bowl with lid (pyrex is better than plastic)
  • a fork

COOKING STEPS:

  1. Measure out a cup of Mealie Meal into the microwave bowl (1 cup should make enough for 3-4 people).
  2. Depending on where you are from and how you like your pap add a pinch of salt, more than a pinch or none at all!
  3. Add just enough of the freshly boiled water to wet all the flour and work it in with the fork.
  4. Set microwave on "High" and the timer for 10 minutes.
  5. Put the lid on your bowl and pop it in the microwave.
  6. Microwave for about a minute and then remove again.
  7. Thoroughly stir in a little bit more water and return to the microwave.
  8. Repeat this process (Remove, add a little water and stir, microwave again) 3 or 4 more times during cooking time at regular intervals - find a moova rhythm that works for you!
