FoodBank SA is paving the way for a new era in food sourcing and sustainability with a campaign to secure business partnerships with manufacturers, producers, and farmers.
The partnerships, to be launched this month, aim to buy food directly from the source. This will ensure the community foodbanks are well stocked with staple products such as sugar, samp, and maize. For the first time, proactive negotiations with big business and farmers will focus more on purchasing goods in bulk than merely waiting to receive good quality food that would otherwise be discarded.
This presents an added incentive to companies, who can help South Africa’s only national foodbanking system procure food, while improving their sales. But companies aren’t expected to be enticed purely by an improved bottom line. “It takes a big heart to join with FoodBank,” said Jeroen de Lijster, FoodBank SA Managing Director.
