Engen, one of FoodBank South Africa’s biggest donors, has renewed its contract with the organisation with a donation of R3.5 million to fuel FBSA’s fleet of 28 trucks over the next three years.
To celebrate the renewed show of support for FBSA and to commemorate World Food Day, Engen staff participated in a “sandwich jam” event at FoodBank Cape Town’s Philippi warehouse this week. A sandwich jam is a high-energy fun-filled sandwich-making event.
Alongside staff from Engen’s head office in Thibault Square was a team from the Red Cross Children’s Trust, 14 players from Santos Football Club and a team from Radio Zibonele. The enthusiastic participants managed to make a total of 1,500 sandwiches in just one hour. The sandwiches were donated to learners at Vuyani Primary School in Gugulethu, where an event was being held by the Department of Education in aid of World Food Day.
Khanyisa Balfour, the manager of corporate social investment (CSI) at Engen, said that when the time came to review its relationship with FBSA, Engen decided to renew its contract “without hesitation”. “We are extremely proud of our association with FBSA and thankful for the opportunity to play a role in the fight to eradicate food insecurity in South Africa,” she says.
“Our CSI model is based on a philosophy of working together to bring about sustainable change. Our association with FBSA is an obvious fit. FBSA’s business model, through relevant partnerships, clearly seeks to establish sustainable means of eradicating food insecurity.”
FBSA’s managing director, Jeroen de Lijster: “By providing fuel to FoodBank, Engen is practically helping to ‘fuel’ the nation, and on behalf of our beneficiaries, we thank Engen for its significant support. It is encouraging to see more corporates entering into public-private partnerships that demonstrate their commitment to the triple bottom line.”
