World Food Day Round-up

E-mail Print

worldfoodday_thFoodBank South Africa celebrated World Food Day (October 16) with an appearance on the eTV breakfast show, which also premiered a three minute video telling South Africans about FoodBank (click here to view the video), and inviting them to support the work through a donation.

Numerous events were held at the local FoodBanks themselves:

FoodBank Cape Town:

At the FoodBank Cape Town event at its warehouse, each guest was invited to bring some non-perishable food to make a food mountain. The food mountain was then distributed to our beneficiaries. A special thank you to Engen and Community Chest for their significant donations.

FoodBank Durban
:

Over 40 Unilever employees have volunteered their time at FoodBank Durban, engaging in various activities. 6 volunteers joined our distribution fleet and assisted with collections and distributions, and 15 volunteers busied themselves in the warehouse, repacking and defacing (removing the branded label, and replacing with a generic NOT FOR SALE label) products.

The remaining volunteers made 4000 nutritious sandwiches as part of a Sandwich Jam.  500 loaves of bread were used to make 4 000 sandwiches, which were distibruted in the afternoon to three schools in Kwa Mashu.  Unilever sponsored the margarine, bread, peanut butter, jam and ice tea for this event.

FoodBank South Africa appreciates the time, resources and money given by our supporters on World Food Day; and we hope that this day will revive and highlight the importance of nutritious food for our lives.
